May Warm Up

Then again, it may not. Cold windy day today. Trees falling all over. Tragic story about a CT guy being picked off his motorcycle by a falling branch in NY.

We love our trees but it's kind of scary when they get to be bigger than your house and are hanging over it. Living next to a state park is a wonderful, natural environment. But sometimes I look at those massive trees and wonder which way they'll finally fall - and when.

When we first moved to our house on a hill we had a nice view out to the east. We still do but the trees down the hill have grown over the last 22 years and we don't see as much as we used to once the leaves come in.

Our winding driveway was lined with apple trees but they were old when we moved here. Old apple trees are amazing; they can be very hollow but the outer layers are so strong that a large adult can walk out on the branches without fear.

But even these hardy ancient trees eventually fall. On returning home from vacation in each of two separate summers, we found that one of the trees had committed suicide. Both years the spring conditions were conducive to a bountiful apple harvest and each of the trees produced more fruit than it's powerful branches or trunk could bear.

We've had a lot of beautiful, sunny, warm spring days so far so you can't get too upset about a cold one once in awhile. We've had days like these in August - you never know what's in store.
